Victoria Point State High School's curriculum represents a sequence of carefully planned and balanced learning experiences designed to meet the current and future needs of our students. It is grounded in student focused educational philosophy and practice, responsive to individual student needs, as well as being rich in real-life significance.

We offer an array of specialist Academy programs which provide rich learning opportunities for students and allow them to excel in a focused area of study.

The Victoria Point State High School Academy aims to create intensive and focused pathways for potential futures, create an environment of motivation, engagement and success, and develop skills and opportunities for students to work with industry professionals and collaborate with the local and wider community in order to build deeper knowledge, skills, training and experience.

The Academy Programs run across Years 7 – 9, and transition in Year 10 to align senior subjects with a chosen pathway.

Students are enriched through the breadth of study, relevance of assessment tasks and through engagement in highly skilled practices.

Year 7 and Year 8

The curriculum across Years 7 and 8 is set for all students.

Students will participate in core subjects with an experiential program for what will later become elective subject Key Learning Areas (KLAs).  This will include a rotational system of semester units in Performing Arts, Visual Art and Design, Design Technologies, and Digital Technologies.

Students have the opportunity to apply for the VPSHS Academy offered as part of School Community Culture.

Supporting Student Learning

Differentiation occurs at Victoria Point State High School at many levels. Our whole school policy of Differentiation means that individual learning needs of each student is met on many levels throughout the school. All teachers throughout our school identify the learning needs of the students in their classes and implement learning activities and teaching strategies to give each student the best opportunity to engage with curriculum at Victoria Point State High School.

Upon enrolment at Victoria Point State High School, students take part in a diagnostic screener assessment that acts as a starting point regarding literacy and/or numeracy support. These results are used in conjunction with all available resources, such as primary school assessment data, NAPLAN, specialist reports etc to form a more holistic picture of the student and any academic supports that may be required.

Students with a diagnosed and verified disability are supported through the Inclusive Education Department, with additional information available on the website through the Support and Resources tab.

Also offered in the junior secondary is a program of teaching and resource allocation that is targeted to the needs of students with identified learning difficulties. These are not students identified with a verified learning disability or with long term behavioural difficulties. These are students who have had long term difficulty throughout primary school attaining success in the core learning areas of English, Maths, Social Science and Science as a result of many learning factors. These students are identified to us through primary/junior secondary transition with the leaning support staff of our feeder primary schools.  These students will engage with the same curriculum as their year level cohort.

Students may also be invited to participate in targeted intervention programs. Screening of students will take place as required, with families notified of their child's involvement in the programs and a brief overview of what is being specifically targeted i.e. reading, numeracy

Participation in all these programs of differentiation is voluntary and removal from the program can be sought by parental request. Placement in all of the programs is based on students' current learning needs and is not permanent. Each student's allocation to these programs is reviewed regularly. â€‹

Individual Curriculum Plans (ICPs)

An Individual Curriculum Plan (ICP) is used to record curriculum decisions for students who are taught and assessed in a higher or lower year level of the Australian Curriculum than their age cohort for a whole Learning Area, or for all Learning Areas and Subjects.

An ICP may be needed for students:

  • With a disability
  • With learning difficulties
  • Who are gifted and talented

The ICP records curriculum decisions, learning expectations, teaching strategies, evidence and parent endorsement.  As students move schools, all content in endorsed plans is available to view and print, or to copy and adjust.
